5 Surprising Facts About Alaska

Wild, rugged and packed with possibilities for adventures, Alaska is a place still full of surprises and secrets. It seems there’s always something new to discover in this last frontier – here are 5 quick facts you probably didn’t know.

Mendenhall, Alaska

MILES & MILES OF COASTLINE
With more than 34,000 miles of beautiful coastline, Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the entire United States combined. Alaska is also the only state to have shorelines on three different seas: the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea.

GLACIER HAVEN
More than half of the world’s glaciers can be found in Alaska. There are about 100,000 glaciers in Alaska and two of the most famous are Hubbard Glacier and Mendenhall Glacier. Even so, they still only cover about 5% of the state.

UNALASKA
The Alaskan town of Dutch Harbor technically doesn’t exist. Unalaska is its official name, but the post office refers to it as Dutch Harbor, as do visitors. “Unalaska” came from an Aleut word implying proximity – not opposition – to the mainland.

EPIC HARVEST
Due to Alaska’s long summer days, the local farms grow some unusually large fruits and vegetables – a 138-pound cabbage, a 65-pound cabbage and a 35-pound broccoli are just a few of the examples in recent harvests.

WILD WILDERNESS
Alaska is home to the largest forest in the United States –the awe- inspiring Tongass National Forest, which is 16.8 million acres and includes an astounding array of mountains, islands, fjords, glaciers and islands. And in fact, it’s the largest temperate rainforest in the world. You can explore this pristine environment with our Tongass Rainforest Hiking Expedition excursion.
